The Philadelphia Community Cats Council

October 16 was National Feral Cat Day

The Philadelphia Community Cats Council (PCCC) and The Pennsylvania SPCA opened one of the nation's first permanent clinics devoted to providing basic veterinary care and spay/neuter surgeries for feral cats. The Clinic has been named "the Cube"

Becky Robinson, president and co-founder of Alley Cat Allies, traveled from Washington, D.C., to join us for this momentous occasion.

It is estimated that the Philadelphia region is home to tens of thousands of feral and abandoned cats-cats that, if not spayed or neutered, could possibly produce millions of sick, unwanted offspring in just a short period of time.

The Cube is located in the PSPCA's former evaluation room, in an area isolated from the rest of the Philadelphia Adoption Center.  In addition to a dedicated exam/surgery space, the PSPCA will  provide veterinary expertise with
its vets and vet techs, medical supplies and equipment.  The facility will be open three days a week. In the first year, we expect to perform 10 spay/neuter surgeries a day-approximately 2,600  surgeries total.  In thesecond and third years, that total will increase to an average of 20 and 30 procedures per day, respectively, or approximately 5,200 and 7,800 procedures per year. With the daily TNRM program, PCCC will be able to reachout to more feral cat colony caretakers, providing basic care and much needed spay/neuter surgeries for thousands more feral and abandoned cats in need!
